從哥倫比亞大學新聞學院畢業後,瑪姬成為《紐約先驅論壇報》的全職記者。受其退伍軍人父親影響,瑪姬渴望成為戰地記者,但在那個年代,女性記者寥寥無幾,更甭提戰地記者。她不斷說服上司並證明自己的能力,在男性記者陸續受徵招,報社缺乏男性戰地記者之際,年僅23歲的瑪姬終於1944年諾曼第登陸前夕抵達受轟炸的倫敦。

 

在戰場上,身為女性的瑪姬被禁止前往第一線,最多只能與醫療小組待在一起。看著其他男性記者紛紛赴前線報導,瑪姬急於取得第一手資料,她發現只要與有配給吉普車的軍官調情,對其燦笑、拋媚眼,他們通常很樂意讓她搭上吉普車,前往更前線。隨者盟軍勝券在握,關於集中營的存在與納粹殘暴無人性的行為的謠言甚囂塵上,為確認消息真實性,瑪姬色誘另一位男性記者,跳上他的吉普車,在無盟軍陪伴的情況下,成為第一批抵達达豪/達浩集中營的記者。

 

同行對瑪姬褒貶不一,與其有競爭關係的男性記者,指控瑪姬利用「不公平的優勢」;女性記者認為瑪姬無所不用其極,甚至獻出身體,也要取得頭條消息。不過,也有人覺得瑪姬的行為,不正是對女性有眾多限制,大環境下的無奈之舉嗎,究竟誰佔盡優勢,誰才是這些規矩的制定者?戰後,原本受任《紐約先驅論壇報》柏林分社負責人的瑪姬,在她與軍情局將軍的婚外情曝光後,隨即被報社調往東京分社。男性軍人或記者在戰場上尋求女性安慰被人們視為理所當然,但當角色換成了女性記者,就成了醜聞,與不檢點、不守婦道畫上等號。

 

瑪姬到日本不久後,韓戰就爆發了,於是她與三位同事一起組成了首批進入韓國報導的戰地記者團之一。1950628日凌晨,在朝鮮人民軍攻入首都漢城(今首爾)前,瑪姬與同事們目睹了漢江大橋被炸毀,也因此困在漢江北岸。最後,他們必須乘著竹筏,在槍林彈雨中過河,前往美軍在水原的指揮部,總共60人的戰地記者團,只有4人生還。瑪姬好不容易抵達水原指揮部,指揮官沃爾頓‧沃克(Walton Harris Walker)將軍以沒有時間為她騰出女性生活空間為由,要求她離開韓國。瑪姬不放棄,繼續將請求向上呈報,最終傳到了沃克的長官道格拉斯‧麥克阿瑟(Douglas MacArthur)上將那邊。麥克阿瑟之後拍了封赫赫有名的電報給《紐約先驅論壇報》,寫道:「女記者入韓的禁令已經解除了,瑪格麗特‧希金斯會受到所有人對專業的最高尊重。」之後,瑪姬也因為在韓戰當中的報導,在1951年成為第一位獲得普利茲國際報導獎的女性。
