Pema Tseden
万玛才旦

Pema Tseden (1969-2023) was a Tibetan director, screenwriter and author. His published works, in both Tibetan and Chinese, include Enticement, The Color of Death, and Tharlo. His works have received numerous literature awards and have been translated into English, French, German, Japanese, Czech. His collection of work Enticement published in 2018 with SUNY Press.

Most of Pema Tseden’s films were shot in Tibetan language by Tibetan teams. His films include The Silent Holy Stones, The Search, Old Dog, Tharlo, Jinpa, Balloon and Snow Leopard. From his realistic, meticulous portrayal of his native land, people have a new understanding of Tibetan culture and its living conditions. His films have been nominated at the Venice International Film Festival, Locarno International Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and other major international film festivals, where they have received Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay Awards and over forty other domestic and international prizes.

This anthology includes representative pieces from various stages of his literary career, such as his unpublished work “The Fragrance of Pine,” his debut short story “Man and Dog,” his acclaimed work written in Mandarin “The Dream of a Wandering Singer,” and the novel “The Search,” which he adapted into a film in 2016. The film was nominated for Best Film at the 62nd Locarno International Film Festival and the 25th Warsaw International Film Festival. These pieces were selected and compiled by Pema Tseden’s son, young director Jigme Trinley, with commemorative essays written by Jigme Trinley and Chen Danqing serving as the preface and postscript. This anthology aims to present a genuine, passionate, talented, and compassionate writer and his literary legacy. A foreign stud sheep arriving with high expectations; a wandering singer searching for the girl of his dreams; a transparent snow mountain spirit; and a road movie. From the beings of the snowy mountains to the harsh Tibetan landscapes, from words and sounds to images and visuals, we once again reach into Pema Tseden’s artistic inner world and visit his lotus-blooming homeland.
