This type of writing corrects certain deviations in literary creation." — Yan Lianke, Chinese writer and winner of Franz Kafka Prize in 2014   During a long transhumance in the Tibetan pastures, a rash and arrogant young herdsman named Naren witnessed the birth of a calf. The calf was nicknamed Little Demon due to his pair of ominous, human-like eyes that hinted at his intelligence and ability to think.  Deeply grieving for his mother who was mercilessly abandoned for childbirth complications, Little Demon felt profound disappointment in the helplessness of his kind and experienced intense, painful reflections on his identity, fostering a complex and visceral hatred for Naren. Through repeated attempts to escape and recaptures, he gradually understood that the meaning of life is not found in the past but in the present and future. For Naren, the arrival of this calf marked the beginning of a turbulent relationship involving himself, his friend, and a mysterious woman they encountered. The vast land, endless wilderness, loneliness, and insatiable desires followed them like shadows throughout their herding journey.   This debut novel of Sonan Tserang, unfolds as a fantastical allegory set on the grassland. Endowed with independent thoughts since its birth, the sensitive and aloof "Little Demon” stood out from the herd. In its naive understanding of  the world, it yearns for its own independent "cattle life". The narrative of this work unfolds alternately through the first-person perspectives of both humans and cattle.
